Projects 2007 - 2008:

 

G r a n t f u n d i n g i d e a s

 

  • dorm recycling coordinators -- grant money to pay salaries or a stipend -- Fritz, Dan Dickison
  • new reycling bins/personal, desk side bins
  • vermi-composter (super powered composting worms)
  • replace traditional bulbs with LED's in all "Exit" lights
  • software that will block printing of "that last page of a print job that has only a few characters or other meaningless tid bits"
  • get the Cistern working again -- functioning water source (at least to water the grass...)

$$$ s o u r c e s

  • machine that will provide cash for aluminum cans -- Fritz, Dan Dickison
  • aluminum can drive
  • build a bio-fuel converter for used cooking oil generated on campus and local restaurants (then sell the fuel)
  • establish a student run Environmental Consulting Firm

  1. Public Announcements about recycling during the game and at half time
  2. have Clyde cougar put recyclables in recycling bin at half time and during the game
  3. have volunteers walk the stands with bins and monitor trash cans

E d u c a t i o n

  • Current status: From Tavia Sessoms, the Residence Hall Director: "I have been trying to get in touch with Michael Turner about this.  I think he is on some recycling committee for Residence Life and Housing.  Michael is our Director of Facilities Services and he would probably be able to answer your questions.  I know that he works with Fisher Recycling for the Residence Halls.  His number is 953-0104, but it is probably easier to reach him by email at turnerm@cofc.edu."   I have not contacted him yet. (9-26-07) NW
  • initiate program to have floor recycling monitors
  • have a contest between dorms -- who can recycle the most? save the most energy? etc.
  • implement an energy monitoring system where students can see how much energy they are using at any given time and over the course of a week, month, etc.

R e c y c l i n g

  • adopt a building! get orgs, clubs, etc. to "adopt a building" and check to make sure bins are in the right place, not contaminated with trash, etc. -- Yoshiki Chakuma, Deborah Bidwell
  • trash dive/recycle drive -- parade through campus and pull recyclables out of trash cans and cull trash from reycling bins

A r a m a r k / f o o d s e r v i c e s

  • encourage use of bio-degradable or recyclable materials
  • encourage use of locally grown veggies
